What You Will Not Want To Do With Your Holiday Custom Greeting Cards
I find it admirable to print custom greeting cards during the holidays. There is something about customized greeting cards that make them truly powerful and special to the receiver. The problem though sometimes is that some people print greeting cards like this with a severe lack of thought and foresight. They think they are customizing greeting cards, but what they are doing is just printing packaged greeting Cards From templates and Greeting Card print packages. Never fall into that trap.
To help you avoid creating bad customized greeting cards that are not really customized, I have this list for you. These are the things that you will NOT want to do with your holiday greeting cards if you really want them to be special and customized.
1. Make them cheaply – First up, never ever print them cheaply. You might have a hundred relatives to send those custom greeting cards to, or maybe you have thousands of clients that need that loyalty reinforcement, but there is absolutely no reason to print those cards cheaply. Even in numbers, every single one of those people need a high quality greeting card to make them feel special. So even though there are cheap packages for greeting card printing out there with cheap materials, do not fall into that trap. Make your custom greeting cards good with the best materials you can afford. Everybody deserves the best you can offer.
2. Use pre-made images – Another very big mistake in customizing your greeting cards is using pre-made images. Clip-arts on custom greeting cards are the absolute worst to receive. They basically imply that the author said, “I am too lazy to make a special card for you so here is a packaged image”. If you are doing your greeting cards this way, you might as well buy them a hallmark card and be done with it. Truly customized greeting cards have original and custom made images that no one has yet seen before. This is one of the most special parts of these kinds of color greeting cards, so try to always avoid the mistake of using pre-made images.
3. Use pre-made messages – The next big sin in custom greeting card printing next to using pre-made images is the use of pre-made messages. It might be a cheesy quote you copied from another greeting card, or you may just lifted a passage somewhere in a book or on the Internet and the effect will be the same. These pre-made messages have “cooked” written all over it, telling people you were just too lazy to write something really meaningful for them. This takes away a lot of the personalization and “specialness” of the greeting card so always try to avoid them. Even though you may not be good at writing, they will still appreciate that you wrote a special greeting card all for them.
4. Using “cooked” templates – While there is no real mistake in using greeting card templates to help you along with your custom greeting card design, you will have some faults in using templates that already have certain design additions into them. If you got a free greeting card template online which already has a design, chances are good that many other people are using this as well. If you use that template, you will lose some originality points with your custom greeting cards, making them of course less special.
That is why it is best to use only Blank Greeting card templates that only have the set dimensions you need to make the draft compatible for greeting card printing. This is the best way to start designing your custom greeting cards. Lose the other design additions in those templates if you really want something new and powerful.
5. Generalizing message labels – Finally, never ever generalize your message labels. Never print those greeting cards with the simple “To my friend” or “To my loyal customer”. These vague and generalized labels turn your greeting cards into a heartless mass produced print. Try to always add the REAL name of the people you are sending your custom greeting cards to. This makes your greeting card really hit personally to people.
You can do this all by hand, or you can have those digital printing companies to do variable printing with your greeting cards so that they can put in the right and different name all the time. This is all possible today, so you really do not have to worry.
Good! Now you know what you should not do with your holiday greeting cards.
