Daily Baseball League Fantasy News: Outfielders to look at Late Season
The outfield is the lynchpin of a good fantasy team. You need at least two really solid outfielders in order to be competitive in your league. However, that doesn’t mean you should overpay to get one. In fact, overpaying for an outfielder is perhaps the worst mistake a fantasy GM can make, because there are so many available in the player universe that have relatively similar stats.
For example, even if just half of the MLB’s outfielders were worthy of a place in a daily baseball fantasy league, there would be 45 guys who can make a difference at the OF position. If you play in a 12-team league, with 3 outfielders each, that’s just 36 slots for 45 of the game’s biggest power hitters. So while it’s important that you have a few top-tier outfielders, it’s more than possible to make a relatively affordable OF your second-through-fourth option without sacrificing the stats you need to stay afloat.
Whether you play in a daily fantasy baseball league or you need to head to the waiver wire in your season-long league, here are a few guys to keep an eye on or pick up as the season winds down.
Brennan Boesch, Detroit. Boesch is pretty much a known quantity at this point, but if you can still grab the MLB’s best rookie (yeah, I said it, Strasburg nation, Boesch is better!) you need to. It’s a requirement. Stop reading and do it if you haven’t. Good. What, you need actual reasons for doing so? OK, fine. I submit to you Boesch’s month of June: 35 hits, 8 homers, 23 RBI, and a .337 average that he’s currently topping off with a blistering .429 rate in July. The best part about Boesch is that he’s performing consistently well against both left- and right-handed pitchers. Nine of his 12 longballs on the year come from righties, but he’s hitting close to .450 against left-handers. This kid is 6’6″, 210 pounds, and destined to be a top-10 fantasy stud. Get on the bandwagon while there’s still room.
Corey Patterson, Baltimore. Patterson isn’t your typical power hitting OF, but he sure is fast. In just the past month, Patterson has filched 11 bases and built up a .320 batting average. He really isn’t reliable at the plate, but if you feel you just need someone to grab some SB’s for your roster, try picking up either Patterson or Scott Podsednik of the LA Dodgers. Both will provide some speed on your hypothetical cyber basepaths, without tanking the rest of your team stats.
Carlos Quentin, Chicago White Sox. On the other side of the OF coin, we have Quentin. He came into the year with high hopes, but he really struggled to produce for the first two months of the year. While his average still isn’t quite where owners would like to see it, His power stats have certainly picked up considerably; he’s hit 10 homers and 27 RBI since the end of May. He’ll never hit for a super high average, but if you can stomach his season .234 BA (which has actually risen about 30 points in the past month, believe it or not), I’m sure it won’t take much to pry him out of the hands of some rather upset fantasy GM’s. Keep in mind, though, that Quentin is usually hotter at the beginning of the year and doesn’t really heat up in the second half the way many players do.
